Porsche Taycan Facelift: Enhanced Range, Performance, and Luxury
29 October 2024Porsche has given its revolutionary electric GT, the Taycan, a mid-life upgrade, focusing on improving range, performance, and interior comfort while preserving the car’s signature design. Notably, this overhaul, codenamed J1.2, directs a quarter of the update budget towards extending the Taycan’s range, another quarter towards enhanced performance, and a smaller share to aesthetic and convenience enhancements. The Taycan’s facelift brings the model closer to the end of the decade with meaningful mechanical advancements.
Refined Battery Packs and Powertrain
At the heart of the update are two new nickel-manganese-cobalt battery packs, available with 82kWh or 97kWh of usable capacity, depending on the selected model and options like Porsche’s Performance Battery Plus. These batteries feature advanced cell chemistry, facilitating faster discharging and recharging capabilities. The larger 97kWh battery, for instance, can handle up to 320kW at a compatible DC rapid charger, enabling quicker refueling on the go.
In addition, Porsche has introduced a more powerful, efficient inverter and a revamped rear axle motor. The reengineered motor offers improved power output through a two-speed automatic transmission on single-motor models or an additional front motor with single-speed transmission on twin-motor models. With the powertrain upgrades and weight reductions in both batteries and the motor, the Taycan’s range has been extended significantly. The entry-level Taycan equipped with the Performance Battery Plus now offers an impressive 422 miles on the WLTP combined cycle, up from 277 miles previously.
Boosted Performance Across the Line-Up
The facelift enhances the power of the Taycan’s key models, particularly during moments of overboost, such as launch control starts. The Taycan 4S now produces up to 590bhp, while the Turbo variant reaches 872bhp, and the Turbo S hits a remarkable 939bhp. At the pinnacle of the Taycan lineup is the new Turbo GT, boasting almost 1,100bhp, high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes, and Pirelli Trofeo RS tyres, making it a high-end addition tailored for thrill-seekers.
Speed improvements are another standout feature of this revision. The base, single-motor Taycan now accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 4.8 seconds, down from 5.4 seconds, while the top-tier Turbo S accomplishes the sprint in just 2.4 seconds—faster than many supercars.
Model Variety and Luxury Features
The Taycan range maintains its familiar structure, with the single-motor rear-wheel-drive Taycan forming the entry point, followed by increasingly powerful all-wheel-drive models such as the 4S, Turbo, and Turbo S. The newly added Turbo GT now leads the pack. Customers can still select from a range of body styles: the classic four-door saloon, the Sport Turismo (a five-door wagon), and the versatile, high-rise Cross Turismo, tailored for various driving surfaces. The latter replaces the single-motor option with an all-wheel-drive Taycan 4 model.
This refresh has also made air suspension standard across all models, even at the base level, ensuring a more refined ride. Additional luxury touches include a reversing camera, heated front seats, a heat pump to optimize powertrain efficiency, and wireless smartphone charging, making the Taycan experience even more comfortable and convenient.
Advantages and Drawbacks of the Facelift
Pros:
- The Taycan’s attractive styling remains largely intact.
- Upgraded batteries provide better range, performance, and charging efficiency.
- Air suspension and premium features enhance ride comfort.
Cons:
- No significant weight reduction has been achieved.
- Four-seat practicality remains limited compared to a larger saloon.
- Residual values are on a downward trend, impacting leasing and finance costs.
In sum, Porsche’s upgraded Taycan reinforces its standing as a high-performance electric vehicle with extended range, increased power, and additional luxury features, making it a more compelling choice in the competitive electric car market
