5 Things the Czech Republic is Famous For

Whether you are thinking of visiting the Czech Republic (even writing that in the today’s world is weird, but who knows where the pandemic takes us?) or have been living here for a while, it never hurts to know more about our gorgeous country. So really, what is the Czech Republic famous for?

  1. Castles

This is the point of disagreement – some call the Czech Republic “the castle capital of the world”, others consider it to be Wales or Germany, but to put it simply, the Czech Republic has a lot of castles. The specific number ranges anywhere between 2000 and 2500 with the Prague Castle being the largest coherent ancient castle complex in the world, says the Guinness Book of World Records! Some of the most famous castles in the Czech Republic include the Prague Castle, Karlštejn Castle, the State Castle and Chateau Český Krumlov, and Lednice Chateau.

  • Beer

You must’ve heard the famous catch-phrase: “the Czech Republic has the highest beer consumption per capita in the world.” Well, that is not surprising considering beer’s rich history (and low price, yeah, we know!). Most likely, the Czech brewery first appeared in 993 at Břevnov Monastery in Prague, getting re-opened just recently, in 2013. At the time, almost all brewing was exclusive to monasteries. Later on, breweries were established in Bohemia and Moravia – many of which were unfortunately destroyed during wars. As time went on, different techniques were used to produce the best-quality beer, including the revolutionary style of brewing introduced in Pilsen in 1842, in which the new brewery dried its malt, using an English-style malt kiln, with indirect heat. Currently, there are over 400 breweries all around the Czech Republic with about 30 of them being located in Prague.

  • Lennon Wall

When John Lennon got murdered, he became a martyr for Czech youth. Shortly after his death, an image of the musician was found on the wall opposite to the French embassy along with lyrics of his songs, political statements and graffiti. Despite countless attempts to erase the paintings prior to 1989, the secret police never managed to keep the wall entirely clean for a prolonged period of time. At the time, it was one of the symbolic ways of expression for Czech young generation. Currently, the wall is owned by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and they allow it to be painted over as, apparently, attempting to white-wash it is a hopeless business.

  • The Mountains

When going to the Czech Republic, you don’t want to miss the chance to climb one of its beautiful mountains! The highest natural peak of the country is Sněžka, which is located on the border with Poland. However, there are many more rocky sights you can visit. Some of the gorgeous picks include captivating Bohemian Switzerland, mysterious Brdy, breath-taking České Středohoří, and refreshing Špindlerův Mlýn.

  • Tennis

The Czech Republic is famous for its tennis players! You might’ve heard of Martina Navrátilová – she is a very famous former tennis player, who is considered one of the best world’s female players ever. She  was the world’s number one for a total of 332 weeks in singles, and a record 237 weeks in doubles! She is the only player in history to hold the top stop in both singles and doubles for over 200 weeks according to Czech Universities. Pretty incredible, right? Some of the other famous names include Tomáš Berdych, Petra Kvitová, Jana Novotná, and Lucie Šafářová.
