If you’ve been living in this amazing city for a while you’re most likely already aware that there are an abundance of great activities during the summertime – from picnics in the wide variety of beautiful parks, to enjoying an excellent pivo at one of the local breweries or beer gardens. From taking in that glorious view of the Castle from Riegrovy Sady to spying on the tourists from the relative safety of Letna, Perhaps you like to take an evening walk along the river at Naplavka…. Whatever your interest, Prague really does have something for everyone.
But what is a cinema lover to do during the summer if one wanted to, say, enjoy a great film while simultaneously taking advantage of those warm summer nights? Is there a place you could go if you wanted to soak in the sun during the day and then, without moving, watch a great film at night?
Actually, fellow cinephile, there is… and as a bonus, it has a beach!
Ok, ok, I know. You’re thinking, “a beach? In Prague?” But I assure you, while you may not be able to swim out into the blue waters of the Mediterranean, you can at least pretend you’re sitting by the sea while savoring the simple pleasures of a delicious mojito or lounging in one of over 200 deck chairs and working on your tan. Have kids? Let them run around the playground or take a dip in the kiddy pool until they’re nice and worn out. Athletic type? Perfect! You can play volleyball on a court with real beach sand or rent a paddle board and head out on the river.
And now you’re thinking, “hold on, didn’t he mention a place for film lovers?” I sure did. And amazingly, it’s all in the same place!
What is this oasis in the city called? The answer, my friends, is Žluté Lázně. Nestled along the Vltava in Praha Podolí, this respite from the craziness of the center is only about twenty-five minutes from Prague 1 on the tram or a twenty minute drive if you happen to have a car (and they even have parking!).
From July to September every year, Žluté Lázně presents their “Yellow Cinema” on Tuesday’s and Saturday’s and while they aren’t the only summer kino in Prague, in my humble opinion, they’re definitely the best.
Every night at 21:30, they dim the lights and play a film on their outdoor screen. This week for example you could snack on a pizza from the on-site Bistro while watching Spider-Man: Homecoming before heading to see the recently released (billion dollar grossing) sequel at one of Prague’s first-rate indoor cinemas.
Haven’t mastered the intricacies of the Czech language yet? Don’t worry: If the film is originally in English they run it with České titulky (Czech titles)!
The venue has recently posted their August calendar and among the showings are the classic musical Grease and feel good movie The Intouchables!
Finally, I’ve saved the best info for last: Entry is a mere 50 crowns for adults and small children are free. So what’re you waiting for? Head over to https://www.zlutelazne.cz/en/yellow-cinema-letni-kino-ve-zlutych/ and check (Czech) it out! Maybe I’ll see you there!
