Every year the grey skies of winter seem to drag on forever, especially as it gets to the end of February. The bright white snow has turned to ankle deep slush, you’re sick of wearing layers, and the cashiers at Albert seem EXTRA grumpy. But, there is one little bright spot to look forward to as February comes to a close … St. Mathews Fair!
Saturday, February 23 marks the opening day of this years’ St. Matthews Fair (Matějská pouť), Europe’s oldest spring festival. Located at the Výstaviště exhibition grounds, this fair boasts 120 attractions, including rollercoasters, merry-go-rounds, a ferris wheel, and ponies so old you probably rode them as a child yourself! The kids can stuff themselves silly with shaved ice, candy floss, and gingerbread hearts. You can enjoy the usual fair grub with plenty of delicious Czech beer to wash it down. Organizers are introducing a farmer’s market to this years’ line up, because, well, nothing goes better with a rollercoaster ride than artisan cheese. St. Matthews Fair really is one of the highlights of the Prague calendar. Your kids will love it and it will give you a chance to pat yourself on the back for making it through another Prague winter.
The fair runs from February 23 to April 22, Tuesday to Friday from 14:00 – 21:00, and weekends from 10:00 to 22:00. It’s an incredibly affordable trip to an amusement park, as kids are free and adults pay 30kc for an entrance ticket. You need to buy separate tickets for the rides, which range from 30 – 50kc a ticket.
