Ariana Grande is having a sensational run. Following on the heels of her record-breaking smash album Thank U, Next, the pop princess is set to play the O2 Arena here in Prague on September 4th and if you want tickets you’ll need to act fast as, for the moment, she’s only set to play one night.
If you weren’t aware of just how much of a phenomenon Grande has become, maybe you haven’t been paying attention.
Last year she became the first artist to occupy the top three positions on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles chart simultaneously since The Beatles in 1964 with her singles “7 Rings,” “Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored,” and “Thank U, Next” respectively. Yeah. You read that right. Since The Beatles. Next she broke the record for the most simultaneous Top 40 Billboard Hot 100 hits by a female artist with 11 of 12 songs making the list!
Now only a year later, she’s back with a new album, Sweetener, for which she already took home the Best Pop Vocal Album Award at the 2019 Grammy’s and the Pop Album of the Year Award at the iHeart Radio Music Awards. As if that wasn’t enough, the album was ranked in the Number One on Billboard’s 50 Best Albums of 2018.
Sweetener, which also features guest appearances by hitmakers Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott, was produced by Grammy winners Pharrell Williams, Max Martin, and Ilya and is said to be Grande’s most personal and “grown up” yet, no doubt influenced by the fact that Grande began recording the album shortly after the terror attack at her concert in Manchester in which twenty-three people (including the suicide bomber) were killed and one hundred and thirty nine were wounded – more than half of them children.
When talking about a direction for Sweetener, Grande reportedly told Pharrell, “Take me somewhere completely new — let’s just go,” and the duo proceeded to record what Grande referred to as “a million” songs together before settling on the 15 that made the cut.
For his part, Pharrell described his role in producing the album as “part listener, part therapist, part stenographer.” Clearly, the collaboration worked. Since its release, the album has been lauded by critics and fans alike in addition to picking up the aforementioned awards.
Grande ended the first leg of the Sweetener tour on July 13th in North America and has earned more than $78 million dollars so far selling close to 700,000 tickets in the first half of 2019! With the European leg kicking off this weekend in London along with a second round in North America near the end of the year, Grande is guaranteed to break her own previous touring records by a wide margin.
