What are the world’s best countries for expats? Billed as “one of the largest surveys worldwide offering an in-depth analysis of expat life across the globe,” Internations’ annual Expat Insider poll ranks 64 countries across the globe based on input from expats living in each of them. Countries are ranked according to six major indices: Quality of Life, Ease of Settling In, Working Abroad, Family Life, Personal Finance, and Cost of Living. And while the Czech Republic ranked at number 10 last year, and improved in every category in 2017 apart from Family Life (where it dropped from #1 to #3), the country falls just short of the top ten this year, coming in at number 11. The Czech Republic moved up big in one area, however: Working Abroad, where it surged from #9 in 2016 all the way up to #1. The country’s unemployment rate – which is the lowest in Europe – and rising salaries led to the big swing here. “My working conditions are excellent here,” an Australian expat said in the survey. “My employer offers me a lot of benefits, including more vacation days and good healthcare.” The Czech Republic also moved up in Quality of Life, coming in at #5 (#7 in 2016), Ease of Settling In (still a low point at #52, but up from #58 in 2016), Personal Finance (#16, up from #27 a year ago), and Cost of Living, up to #5 compared to #8 last year. While the country move up overall in the Ease of Settling in rankings, many expats surveyed still find it difficult to learn the Czech language and make local friends. So why has the Czech Republic dropped overall in this year’s rankings? In the 2017 poll, one country’s huge surge overtook all others: Bahrain, which moved up all the way from #19 to the top position at #1. The Persian gulf country was called a “home away from home” from many respondents, who praised the country’s English-friendliness and welcoming culture. Bahrain was described as “a beautiful melting pot of many different cultures,” by one respondent, while another stated that “Bahrainis are very friendly and welcoming” and “everyone speaks English.” While Bahrain moved up greatly in the list, the rest of the top countries are familiar destinations from previous polls. Here’s the 2017 Expat Insider top 25: 1. Bahrain 2. Costa Rica 3. Mexico 4. Taiwan 5. Portugal 6. New Zealand 7. Malta 8. Colombia 9. Singapore 10. Spain 11. Czech Republic 12. Vietnam 13.
