Welcome to my hometown, the town where I was born and now I’m back in for a while. This place is just perfectly situated on the north of the Czech Republic, just a few km from the borders with Germany and just one and a half hour away by train from Prague. This is a great place to stop on your way to any of the hikes around the north and not that expensive to stay in as well.
This small town with around 50,000 inhabitants has many activities to enjoy. A cute, small zoo situated on the hill above the river Elbe looks like a small castle from a Czech fairy tale. Why should you go there? This Zoo is not just an ordinary zoo that you can find around the Czech Republic. Don’t expect any lions, elephants or big gorillas. On the other hand, you should expect the animals that are living around us in Czech Switzerland, for example, bears, deer, many kinds of birds, goats, pigs, etc. You can even feed goats there.
If you are interested in sightseeing, you can go and visit the Děčín Castle that is situated on the other side of the river. They have a guided tours either in Czech, German or English. Want to do something different? Maybe a boat tour to Germany? Why not? Take a boat down in Děčín and go ahead! Looking for more activities? You can do badminton, bowling, cycling or even go fishing in Děčín. There are other endless options around the town as well. If you like horse riding there is no better place to go and ride on the horseback to see the best of the place. Where to stay there? You can find many hotels but I recommend to stay at some guesthouse for the best experience.
Sněžník, the best hike and view spot around. I try to go to this place at least once a year when I’m home. I just love the view and the hike is not that hard. You can find many ways to go up. Use the public transport that is quite easy to follow or get there by car or a bike. I love going up by the main hiking path and visiting the tower on the top of the hill. If you go there you will definitely love the view! I love visiting this place at sunset or sunrise because the beauty just can’t beat anything else.
Pravčická brána, the gateway to a fairy tale. This natural-made stone gate is a treasure you will find at the end of your hike. Again, you can take the public transport that is not hard to follow from Děčín or you can go by car, which would be easier in this case. When you get to the start point you will take the right color of the hike to follow. It is up to you because all of the hikes are awesome. If the weather is great I would recommend trying the longer hike with the boats to get back to the same place. Boats in Hřensko are cool! If there is not much water in the river it is not possible to go by the boats so check it in advance, just to be sure you are OK. This place with an overwhelming view is a piece of art. Sit down on the rock, watch the sunset, relax or get some food in the nearby restaurant.
Bratské oltáře, the Fraternal altars, a hidden gem near Česká Kamenice to explore. This place is hidden in the woods and not too many people know about it because it is not shown on the map. I actually found this place just because of Geocaching. What does it mean? You can also find a geocache hidden there so look for your treasure too. How to get there? The best option here is the car. Even though you can use a bike or a bus, it would be easier to get the car.
Take the hike and enjoy the walk. What should you expect on the walk? This stunning place in the woods I would even call it a holy place, where you will find many sculptures or pictures on the rocks that show the cross path holy story. The altar with the statues says it on its own. The place just takes your breath away and makes you speechless. What a piece of art made in the rocks and woods hundreds of years ago. Just please make sure, you take your trash back with you and don’t destroy anything there. PS: Find the cache called Bratrské oltáře!
There is also a protected landscape area, Labské pískovce, a place where you can find many natural hidden gems just by walking in the woods. There are many small waterfalls you can find on your way just walking by. No need to tell you a place to go because there are many to see, sitting on the grass or in the woods watching how the life pass by.
The ruin of the Dolský water mill is situated in between of the river Kamenice and Jetřichovická Bělá river in the Czech Switzerland National Park. I checked the history of this place as well and the first note about this water mill comes from the year of 1515 already. A magical place where the nice path through the woods will take you and so you can see a bit of the history.
And don’t forget to grab a coffee or some nice home made lemonade in this beautiful place in Děčín that has opened just a few days ago and that I’m writing this article in. It is called Coffee & Books.
ENJOY YOUR TRIP!
