Is there anything more spring-like than the scent of lilacs and magnolia wafting through the air on a mild sunny day? In the Czech Republic the answer is no. The REAL smell of spring is smoke and fire and sausages. Why embrace the glory of spring, when you can give a massive na shledanou to winter?
Based on ancient tradition, April 29th was said to be the ultimate night of bad juju. Evil was at its most powerful with witches flying overhead for their annual…uh…convention? Regardless, what the day needed was a good ol’ fashioned bonfire to ward off evil and (bonus!) give people a heaping helping of fertility!
One of the best places to observe and participate in this fun (yet slightly unnerving) event is at Žluté lázně. Organizers have planned an amazing day for people of all ages, from the very youngest of witch burners to those that have lit up a number of witch effigies in their day. Events include: Theater, art, games and attractions for the kids, while the grownups can enjoy live music, djs, contests, sausage roasting, and an afterparty. Admission is 50Kc, and FREE for kids under 100cm or if you come in costume.
The event starts at 14:00, with the burning at 18:00. Don’t miss out on this classic Czech tradition with your whole family.
