Press release dated 4th of August 2020
The reconstruction of Křižík pavilions and the Spirála Theater, which had been postponed for years, has been approved. The City of Prague Council approved the reconstruction of buildings B, C, E, and the Spirála Theater. The fieldwork on both projects will begin by the end of this year. The value of the reconstruction of Křižík pavilions is estimated at 245 million CZK, and Spirála Theater will cost 217 million CZK.
“I am very happy that we managed to push through the much-needed reconstruction of the other three parts of Křižík pavilions and the Spirála Theater, which we have been striving for a long time. The dilapidated buildings will finally become representative and usable for various types of events, from cultural, through educational to commercial. The unique space of the Spirála Theater will accommodate many other programs at Výstaviště, which we now have nowhere to place,” explains Pavel Vyhnánek, Deputy Mayor for Budget and Finance at Výstaviště Praha. “One of the Křižík pavilions is already under reconstruction, the others should follow by the end of the year,” adds Vyhnánek.
“We truly welcome the approval of the reconstruction; the repair works on Křižík pavilions will give the new opportunities to Výstaviště. At the same time, we are glad to have quality premises available during the closure of the Průmyslový palác due to the planned reconstruction. Křižík pavilions with an exhibition area of 5,500 square meters and an auditorium for 3,000 visitors can largely replace it,” says Tomáš Hübl, Chairman of the Board of Výstaviště Praha, adding: “The reconstruction will improve not only the economics but also the look of Výstaviště. Destroyed buildings will be transformed into modern and operationally efficient buildings, and modifications will also affect their close surroundings, which need to be transformed as well.”
When projecting the reconstruction of Křižík pavilions, the company Výstaviště Praha a. s. sought the most economical way of its implementation, following the current construction standards and norms. A radical reduction in the energy intensity of these buildings was emphasized at the same time. The reconstruction project was prepared in cooperation with Doc. Akad. Arch. Michal Brix.
The Spirála Theater will be reconstructed into a modern multifunctional hall for holding musical and theatrical performances, as well as conferences and other social events. Also, an additional hall will be built in the basement of the building. At the same time, the theater will be equipped with modern theater and audiovisual technology. The author of the reconstruction is one of the authors of the original project, architect Tomáš Kulík.
“The Spirála Theater is an exceptional building, which has been in a desolate state since the floods. It is a unique building and its roof is a technical monument. The reconstruction of the theater was awarded by the Community of Architects with Grand Prix in 1993. We are so glad that we can return this building to its original beauty”, describes Vyhnánek.”Spirála will have huge potential after the reconstruction, in its time one of the most important musicals was played here – Jesus Christ Superstar, the performance was seen by more than 850,000 spectators,” adds Hübl.
The need for reconstruction for Křižík pavilions and the Spirála Theater has been discussed for several years already. Křižík pavilions are in a poor technical condition, the Spirála Theater has been falling into disrepair since the floods.
Their reconstruction will bring a wide range of opportunities for cultural, social, and commercial events at Výstaviště.
