The first ever Comic Con Prague finished up last Sunday at the O2 Universum in Prague and was a smash success with some 23,000 attendees. It was so popular, in fact, that the organizers have already dated the event for 12-14 February, 2021!
This years event hosted a number of celebrity appearances and convention goers had the chance to listen to panel discussions and grab photos with people like Ron Perlman (HELLBOY), Brandon Routh (SUPERMAN RETURNS), John Rhys Davies (RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, LORD OF THE RINGS), Casper Van Dien (STARSHIP TROOPERS) and a number of cast members from Game of Thrones including the Night King himself, Vladimír Furdík.
The celebs were joined by a host of comic book artists and writers. Full disclosure: I was also a guest this year and hosted three panels – the first was a discussion of my long career in film followed by a discussion of working with Spielberg and George Lucas and, lastly, a conversation about Hollywood’s rich history with science fiction.
Walking around the convention floor was amazing. Cosplayers were everywhere – from 7 foot tall Wookiees, to tiny Jawas and more than one little Rey. Harley Quinn was very popular as well and I spied more than one “fat Thor,” which looks like a mashup of Thor from the Marvel series of films and Jeff Lebowski from the Coen Brothers’ film THE BIG LEBOWSKI. Pretty hilarious.
There was an old-school video game arcade, loads of vendors selling pop culture merch, a replica of Knight Rider’s Knight Industries 3000 car, and even some specialty displays like the Star Wars Prop Builders group and the Czech unit of the 501st Legion (a group of cosplayers who play Stormtroopers), many of whom have actually had the opportunity to appear in recent STAR WARS films!
One of the convention organizers said to “expect a much bigger event next year,” now that they have proven to the backers that there is a hunger for Comic Con in Prague. Bigger celebs! More vendors! More panels! I for one can’t wait!
