The tree is in place, the stalls are active, and organizers are still decorating Old Town Square for the unveiling of Prague’s largest Christmas market, which will be officially unveiled on Saturday, December 2 with a tree lighting ceremony.
That’s an unusually late date, and thanks to a shortened advent calendar, this year’s Christmas market at Prague’s Old Town Square will be the open for the smallest timeframe in history until closing the first week in January.
But this year’s Christmas market is positioned to be bigger and better than those in year’s past thanks to some upgrades from organizers.
The most noticeable of those will be the central “bridge” overlooking Old Town Square and the Christmas market stalls, which will be twice the size of last year’s edition.
Also, a new layout of stalls will allow for more than ever before. This year’s market will feature booths surround the outer edges of Old Town Square with an inner arrangement of booths in diagonal rows.
Intended to improve the flow of foot traffic through the Square and market, the new layout will accommodate a total of 99 stalls – the highest number in the Christmas Market’s history, and the largest in Prague by far.
In comparison, the Christmas market at Wenceslas Square, will will also be officially unveiled on Saturday, holds only 29 stalls.
Also at this year’s market in Old Town Square, visitors will be able to purchase special Christmas-themed mugs featuring the Prague skyline for sipping mulled wine and other hot beverages at the price of 60 crowns.
Every day from 16:00 – 20:00, a special cultural program will be presented on a central stage at Old Town Square, with Czech and foreign folklore, Christmas traditions, historical music, and much more. More than 700 performers will take the stage during the Christmas season.
The Old Town Square Christmas Market will be officially unveiled this Saturday, December 2nd, with a tree-lighting ceremony at 16:30 set to the classic theme of Vltava by Bedřich Smetana (read more about the famed Czech composer here).
From 17:30, the tree will light to the music from the popular Czech fairy tale Krkonošské pohádky by Vadim Petrov. The lighting ceremony with musical accompaniment will be repeated every day on the hour.
This year’s Christmas market at Old Town Square in Prague will run daily from 10:00 – 22:00 (food stalls open till midnight) until January 6.
