In the Czech Republic, we have a saying: kolik řecí umíš, tolikrát jsi člověkem. The meaning is quite easy to understand. It says if you can speak more languages, you can be a better person. I love learning languages, but not just to be a better person. I love to meet new people from around the world, and if you can talk to them in their own language, you will be closer to them. It is not easy for us to learn some new language if we don’t go to the country and learn there. There is another option as well!
One nice event for people who want to learn a language is held in Prague. I’m pretty sure there are some similar events around the globe as well. This event is called Speak Easy. You don’t have to be perfect in a language. So how does that work?
It’s Sunday, and I’m sitting in the middle of Wenceslas Square, thinking of what to do. I love languages and meeting new people from around the world, as I said already. I can do those two things at one time. On Sunday in the Pizzeria Garden Václavka you can find many people from around the world. They are there on purpose; they all want to learn or at least to talk in some language. The event is just amazing and extraordinary. I have met many people there from around the world and I’m still in touch with many of them. It’s perfect when you would love to practice some language with the native speakers. How does it work? Everyone who wants to talk there writes down his or her language that they would love to practice and sits down at the right table with the right flag. You don’t have to be worried; it is not like an ordinary language lesson at school. There are many people from around the world who are living in Prague or who are just visiting and would love to meet some new friends, etc. Those people who sit at the same table speak the language that is shown on a flag situated on the table. There is no rule what to talk about or what to do, or even whom to talk to. Choose the person you’d like to talk to and talk about whatever you want. The atmosphere is very relaxed and people there are really nice, inspiring and exciting to talk to. Many of them are living in Prague but they are originally from many places around the world. What languages can you speak there? You can speak many as you can imagine! Czech, English, Russian, German, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese and even Korean or Japanese. This event is so beneficial for you in many ways. Let me tell you just few of them: meeting people from around the world means you can meet new friends there, practicing the language with the others is great for you and you can learn the accents because there is always at least one native speaker for a table, learning vocabulary is so easy when you have to talk to other people, practicing is the right way to do so, and of course spending time with such inspiring and interesting people is beneficial as well.
