They Did It: The UK Has Left The EU. Now What?

Now that Brexit has finally happened, many people are left wondering how things will work between the UK and EU member states… the chief concern, of course, is what it will mean for UK citizens living in the Czech Republic and Czech or EU citizens living in the UK and the second most asked question is: What will travel to the UK look like now?

The simple answer to both is that… in the long term, it’s tricky. But the good news is that, at least for the moment, not much will change at all. In fact, the UK is now in what the government is calling “a transition period” until the end of 2020 while the UK government and EU continue to negotiate additional arrangements.

During this phase all of the current rules on trade, travel, and business for the UK and EU will continue to apply with new rules taking effect on 1 January 2021.

If you’re an EU citizen currently living in the UK (or if you’re from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland), you’ll need to apply to stay in the UK as of 31 December of this year and the UK government has created a portal on the web to help you create a plan of action before that date rolls round: https://www.gov.uk/staying-uk-eu-citizen/y

If you are a citizen of the UK living in the Czech Republic, there’s also a portal for you – and a much more detailed one at that. You can find it here: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-the-czech-republic

CitySpy will of course update you with news as things develop between the EU and now independent UK.

Were you in support of Brexit? Or were you with the Remain Party? What about the rumors of a “Czexit”? Do you think it would be a good thing or a bad thing for The Czech Republic? Let us know in the comments!
