While most Covid-related restrictions in the Czech Republic (keep up that social distancing!) have been lifted, you may find yourself well accustomed to enjoying nights in with your family or just curling up with your Netflix subscription.
Well, there’s certainly a lot to watch in the era of “peak tv,” and so for this week’s offering of What To Watch: Suggestions for the Current Way of Life, we’re going to focus on Netflix since the company is the reigning king of streamers at the moment and, if you missed last week’s post, you can check that out right here: https://cz.cityspy.network/prague/features/what-to-watch-suggestions-for-the-current-way-of-life-part-2/).
If you’re not planning to head out to the newest Beer Garden in Prague this weekend (and you ought to be, it’s awesome and you can read about it here: https://cz.cityspy.network/prague/features/hilton-opens-beer-garden-karlin-just-in-time-for-summer/) here are some hot new films and series on offer. Let’s dive in!
First up, this is not a Netflix movie per se, but it is on Netflix so we’re going to take a look at it.
UNCUT GEMS. Just before the end of 2019 (ah, 2019) an Adam Sandler movie was getting a lot of buzz only not for the usual reason. In other words, people weren’t talking about it in relation to its likely Razzie nominations. In fact, for the first time since Paul Thomas Anderson’s PUNCH DRUNK LOVE, people were mentioning Sandler and the words Oscar together. In the end, it didn’t work out that way for the “Sandman,” but the latest Safdie Bros. film was not undeserving of praise – and in particular for Sandler’s work in the film. I will tell you that, if you’re prone to anxiety attacks, you may want to avoid the film (and stay away from their previous film, too – the drug fueled epic GOOD TIME). Check out the trailer below. It’ll tell you all you need to know about whether this one’s for you:
Next! THE LOVEBIRDS. This is a Netflix Original starring Kumail Nanjiani (STUBER, THE BIG SICK) and Issa Ray (HBO’s Insecure) as a couple who are forced to go on the run to clear their names after they accidentally get caught up in a murder mystery. Here’s the trailer:
If you’ve exhausted every series out there and don’t want to start a re-watch of something older, Netflix has a buzzy new series called Sweet Magnolias (not to be confused with the Julia Roberts film STEEL MAGNOLIAS). JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley play lifelong best friends in this new show that combines the small town charm of Gilmore Girls with the country gossip of Hart of Dixie. Check out the trailer!
Another new series, this one from the creator of Netflix’ smash hit Money Heist and the producers of Netflix smash hit The Crown: White Lines. While social media response has been hit or mixed, you can’t deny the trailer looks intriguing. Have a look and then look below for a little info about it:
The series follows a non-linear structure, skipping between Manchester and Ibiza while also straddling two different time periods. Here’s the rundown: After leaving his family in the UK to pursue his dream of becoming a world-reknowned DJ, Axel Collins (Tom Rhys Harries) manages to build a whole new life for himself in Ibiza, including a new group of friends, a girlfriend, and soon after, fame follows. It all comes crashing down when he mysteriously vanishes without a trace. That’s the set-up. The series follows Zoe Walker (Laura Haddock) who, 20 years later, jets off to Ibiza to identify her brother’s body and decides to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding her bother’s disappearance.
As of last week, White Lines was the number one most-watched series in the UK and Top 10 in the US. In case you’re one of those people who holds off on a series until you know there will be more episodes… Season two is already in the works according to series star Tom Rhys Harries. Sex, drugs, and EDM. What’s not to like?
Next, a Netflix original, uh… Joint… from legendary filmmaker Spike Lee. Check out the trailer and then come back for a little info:
DA 5 BLOODS tells the story of four African-American Vets — Paul (Delroy Lindo), Otis (Clarke Peters), Eddie (Norm Lewis), and Melvin (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) — who return to Vietnam to searching for the remains of their fallen Squad Leader (Chadwick Boseman in flashbacks) and the promise of buried treasure. The four heroes, joined by Paul’s concerned son (Jonathan Majors), battle forces of man and nature — while confronting the lasting ravages of “The Immorality of The Vietnam War.”
DA 5 BLOODS. Drops June 12th.
Next time we’ll take a look at the latest Charlize Theron actioner coming in July to Netflix as well as taking a look at the latest offerings on other platforms like Mrs. America on Hulu starring Cate Blanchett and all the new (and old) stuff coming to the newly-named HBO Max!
