What To Watch: Suggestions For The Current Way of Life Part 2

Back again with info on your next binge watch. If you missed our previous post you’ll want to give that a look as it also has some excellent recommendations, if I do say so myself (Ozark!!! Wow!). Now then. This week brings some new films and the debut of a hot new series with big stars to your favorite streaming platforms so let’s dive right in.

First up is EXTRACTION.

This non-stop action film starring Chris Hemsworth comes from the Russo Brothers, directors of the last two AVENGERS films, who served as producers. In the directors chair this time is their Stunt Coordinator and 2nd Unit director Sam Hargrave who’s goal, it seems, is to make you feel as if you’re right in the middle of the action.

The film centers on a black-ops mercenary (Hemsworth) who is hired to rescue the teenaged son of a Mumbai drug lord from his rivals in Bangladesh.

And with that, you’ve pretty much got all you need to know. Want a little more info? Don’t worry, we’re here for ya. Here’s the longer Netflix synopsis:

In an underworld of weapons dealers and traffickers, a young boy becomes the pawn in a war between notorious drug lords. Trapped by kidnappers inside one of the world’s most impenetrable cities, his rescue beckons the unparalleled skill of a mercenary named Tyler Rake, but Rake is a broken man with nothing to lose, harboring a death wish that makes an already deadly mission near impossible.

How many action movie tropes did you count in that paragraph? What the film may be missing in terms of originality or story, it more than makes up for in action photography including a series of “oner’s” (shots made to look as though there are no edits). Here’s a little behind the scenes on one of them:

There’s a word for this: Crazy!

EXTRACTION will pop up on Netflix this Friday.

My recommendation: WATCH IT!

Next!

Now we switch over to our good friends at Apple. Apple has had what you might call a bit of a rocky start. They have seemingly little content and of their debut shows, only the Jennifer Aniston/Reese Witherspoon series The Morning Show got much buzz.

Now, don’t get me wrong, if you loved Jason Momoa in See, Hailee Steinfeld in Dickinson, or Joel Kinnaman in For All Mankind, more power to you… and for lack of other originals, Apple has already greenlit a second season of all three (though, due to the global pandemic, who knows when they’ll start shooting), but this next entry may be their most interesting yet and, as a coincidence, it stars yet another Marvel Avenger. This time it’s Cap himself, Chris Evans.

Here’s the rundown: The limited drama series is a gripping, character-driven thriller based on the 2012 New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by William Landay. Evan’s plays an assistant DA whose world is shattered when his beloved son gets charged with murder.

Need a bit more? Here you go:

Andy Barber (Evans) has been an Assistant District Attorney in suburban Massachusetts for more than twenty years. He is a respected member of the community, an absolute bulldog in the courtroom, and has a comfortable home life with wife, Laurie (Michelle Dockery, DOWNTON ABBEY), and son, Jacob (Jaeden Martell, KNIVES OUT, IT). When a shocking crime shatters their small New England town, Andy is blindsided when Jacob is arrested and charged with the murder of a fellow student. Jacob insists that he’s innocent, and Andy believes him. Why wouldn’t he? He’s his father. But more and more damning facts and shocking revelations begin to surface, Andy’s marriage begins to crumble and as the trial intensifies, Andy begins to realize how little he knows about his son. In the midst of this, Andy will face a trial of his own – between loyalty and justice, between truth and allegation, between a past he’s tried to bury and a future he can’t imagine.

What do you think? Sounds damn good to me. Here’s the trailer:

Three episodes premiere this Friday, April 24th with the remaining episodes debuting weekly.

But… but how could he be a murderer? They look like such a lovely family!

Recommendation: GIVE IT A SHOT. I know I will.

Staying with Apple, the long-in-the-works revival of Steven Spielberg’s 1985 series Amazing Stories debuted a few weeks ago and while I have watched every episode so far, I have to say, none have quite captured the magic of the original. That said, if you’re stuck at home – which you are – there are worse things to watch… and one of the episodes (Dynoman and the Volt!) features the last on screen work of the late, great Robert Forster as a grandfather who finds himself imbued with some pretty amazing powers. Check out the teaser trailer below:

Finally, jumping back to Netflix, the fourth season of the hit Spanish-language series Money Heist (or La Casa de Papel) just dropped and, while I haven’t seen it yet, the word is it’s excellent.

Since I watched the previous seasons and enjoyed the cast and twisty story, I’m going to go ahead and recommend Season Four – with the caveat that, if you haven’t seen it, you should start at the beginning, of course.

So that’s it for this week. What are you watching that you love? Shout out in the comments below and we just might feature your recommendation in the next What To Watch round-up!
